Parkdale Portraits

LISA KANNAKO Parkdale Portraits at the Bell Jar Café (2072 Dundas Street West) to May 27 (416 535-0777). See listing. Rating: NNNN

Residents of Parkdale asylum will appreciate these candid shots of neighborhood residents, taken within two blocks of Queen and Lansdowne, where Kanaka lives.

In order to take these shots she used some local camouflage: her camera was concealed in a shopping cart filled with garbage bags and towels.

Working under these conditions her staging and sense of color still manage to be sharp, and her eye is consistently offbeat and curious. Most endearing is her decision to remain fresh and cheerfully engaged in this weather beaten corner of the downtown core.

Especially effective is her portrait of a local man, let’s call him a street character, playing the violin on the steps of gallery 1313.

Parkdale Projects is a part of Contact Photography Festival.
