Dating looks and feels different for everyone, but some communities notice a trend more than others. For Toronto’s gay community, it might not always be perfect, in fact, some gay men we caught up with say it can often be a huge pain. In this edition of This is Dating Now we caught up with some queer locals about what Toronto’s dating scene looks like these days.
For Tanveer, he says the gay dating scene in the city is a hot mess.
“We don’t grow up with ideas of what relationships should be like, so we are trying to figure it out as we go, so it’s messy,” he said.
Despite the headaches, it’s paid off for Tanveer who says he is now off the market.
“Love yourself and have a lot of fun,” he said.
Similar feelings are shared by another local who says it’s not easy to find a boyfriend in the city.
“Some of them that are single, prefer to be single… I cannot understand what’s wrong with Toronto, let’s go guys, let’s date, please.”
In a city as big as Toronto, the options are endless, but for this next local that we caught up with, he says he feels overwhelmed and often let down.
“I feel like gay people have lost what the real meaning of love is, we just like to focus more on external things instead of looking for the real person,” he said.
He says while he can’t speak for everyone, he does feel like the majority of the community is “very hard to date these days.”
He tells Now Toronto that he’s been single for four years, and his last date was two years ago, despite not officially locking the date down, he says he still has his eyes out for that lucky guy.
“One day we’ll be together, it’s just not the right time,” he said.
As the word ‘messy’ keeps popping up amongst locals who we talk to, one person explains hookup culture is the reason behind the drama.
“All the gays just want to hookup, nothing serious, it’s hard to find someone to date nowadays,” he said.
That could explain why he says his last date was nearly one year ago.
“It’s hard to find people to create connections… that’s what I want,” he said.
So, Toronto’s gay community has a lot of love to share, but some are struggling to find it. It may be messy now, but the singles we talked to are hopeful that things will turn around, both for them, and their fellow queer singles.
