The comedy industry’s always looking for something original. That’s one reason why Ian Harvie – an FTM transgendered comic – is super-hot right now.[rssbreak]
The other is that he’s pretty damn funny. Harvie brings his unique take on queer life to We’re Funny That Way tonight (Thursday, May 13) at Buddies. See Comedy Listings.
You’ve toured with Margaret Cho. What does nobody know about her?
If you’ve seen her comedy, you know there isn’t anything that grrrl doesn’t disclose onstage! Your question should be the opposite, “What don’t you want to know about her?” I love her, she’s so damn honest.
What’s the most common question audiences ask you after shows?
“Ummm, do you really have a vagina, you know, going on… down there???” As if I didn’t know where they were talking about.
Boys Don’t Cry or TransAmerica?
Kim Peirce is a friend of mine, so Boys Don’t Cry.
You were born in Maine, near Beaver Pond. Weird twist of fate?
A lot of young queers used to swim in that pond. There’s definitely something in the water.
What comic would you love to open up for?
Once you’ve worked with Margaret, it’s hard to compare. But I’d love to freak out one of Dane Cook’s audiences of 20,000 meat snorkels. That’d be fun. On a more sincere note, I’d love to work with Paula Poundstone.
You’ve been called the “most unique stand-up comic in the country.” Who did you beat out for the title?
I was the only one in the competition.
If you and Chaz Bono got into a wrestling ring, who would win?
Cher. She’d hop in that ring and turn back time, make like it never happened. Then we’d all start singing He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother and it would morph into a dance number with lots of feathers.
Post-show plans at Toronto’s We’re Funny That Way?
Not sure where yet, but I’ll likely be hanging with my friend Lucas Silveira (of the Cliks). Me and my trans brother gotta catch up – it’s a guy thing.
