Young thing

If you have a hankering to pan for gold or think of the Klondike as a romantic place, check out the single-performance remount of The Demimonde , a hit at the 2005 Fringe .

Written and directed by Jenny Young , the performance is part of the Royal Ontario Museum ‘s look at the Alaska-Klondike gold rush of the 1890s, on Sunday (October 1), from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.

Presented by tiny bird theatre (formerly Donikers Daily), the music-and-dance-filled show focuses on a quartet of women who made their way north to find fortune and love. The returning cast includes Aviva Armour-Ostroff , Sara Gilchrist , Pasha Mckenley and Gray Powell , with newcomer Maev Beaty and guest Klondike Kate (drag artist David Clark , aka Candi Barr ).

Jean Murray , author of a book on the period’s music, introduces the piece with a talk on songs of the gold rush.

Queer cab

If you’re a young queer looking for an open mic to show off your talent, you can’t do any better than Queer Cab . The monthly show at Buddies in Bad Times offers music, spoken word, dance, drag, song, video, rants – anything, in short, that a budding artist can think of.

The host and theme change for each pwyc performance, which runs the first Wednesday of every month. This month’s theme is Your Hot Gossip , with host Sean Gehon , Star! Daily correspondent and MuchMusic VJ Search runner-up.

2b talented

We’ve written about the high quality of shows by Halifax’s 2b theatre , which has delighted us with performances of Revisited and Invisible Atom this past year.

Turns out we’ll see more work by the company and some of its artists. Artistic co-director Christian Barry , the director of Revisited, is now at the Tarragon as the recipient of the Urjo Kareda Residency Grant . He’s assistant-directing and working with the Tarragon’s playwrights-in-residence.

And by chance, the two actors in Revisited are both working at the Tarragon, though in different productions. Michelle Monteith performs in Michael Healey ‘s Generous in the Mainspace, while Steven McCarthy is part of the cast of Theatre Smash ‘s Tiny Dynamite , currently in the Extra Space. In the midst of all this, the three are creating a new version of Revisited. We can’t wait.

Colourful T.O. tix

The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA), which runs the T.O. Tix booth at Yonge-Dundas Square, celebrates the unofficial launch of the theatre, dance and opera season with Kaleidoscope , a free event with live entertainment and ticket giveaways. TAPA will also announce a new contest that coincides with T.O. Tix’s millionth ticket sale.

Wednesday (October 4), noon to 2 pm. See One-Nighters, page 98.
