Toronto’s summer of stage: The best festivals and shows on offer

Fringe fever rises

The year’s biggest theatre and dance binge returns for its 28th edition with more than 150 productions by established artists and first-time creators at 30-plus venues across the city. This is the last time the Fringe can set up its beer tent behind Honest Ed’s, before construction takes over the site.

Among the participating artists are Jessica Moss (a Fringe fave whose new script, Cam Baby, won this year’s new play contest), Kat Sandler, Dave Carley, Peter N’ Chris, Christel Bartelse, Sky Gilbert, Bruce Dow, Adam Bailey, Denise Norman, Shari Hollett, Asian-sploitation and Britta Johnson.

Be sure to sample some of the site-specific shows, which include Jordan Tannahill’s Get Yourself Home Skyler James, Shakespeare BASH’d’s The Comedy Of Errors, and The Unending, a walkabout show that laces together three short plays (by August Strindberg, Samuel Beckett and Julie Tepperman), presented by the Convergence Theatre.

And if young children are part of your world, take them to FringeKids. Barb Scheffler’s Pirates Don’t Babysit! and Shakey-Shake and Friends’ Twelfth Night… A Puppet Epic! are sure to be highlights (not just because of those exclamation points), and there’s a play contest for budding playwrights aged eight to 12.

Summerworks sizzles

Canada’s most impressive curated arts festival enters its second quarter–century with a new head and an impressive roster of artists.

HSGStage_moviesLA_djanet-sears.v2F.jpg

Djanet Sears contributes to the 2016 edition of SummerWorks.

Laura Nanni, the new artistic and managing director, brings to SummerWorks a strong background in developmental works and interdisciplinary -experimentation, having worked at Nuit Blanche and Harbourfront Centre’s HATCH program and as director of the Rhubarb Festival.

With the assistance of festival producer Meara Tubman-Broeren and six curators – Tara Beagan and Guillermo Verdecchia (theatre), Jenn Goodwin (dance), Cathy Gordon (live art) and Adam Bradley and Andrew Pulsifer (music) – Nanni’s brought together -creators from Canada and beyond.

The full program hasn’t yet been -announced (that happens June 21), but even a brief list of those involved whets our performance appetite.

Look for a collaboration between impressive theatre artists Djanet Sears (Harlem Duet, The Adventures Of A Black Girl In Search Of God) and Brad Fraser (Unidentified Human Remains And The True Nature Of Love, Poor Super Man), whose work hasn’t been on a Toronto stage for too long, developing a piece with young playwright Jijo Quayson. Another figure from the 1980s, active in feminist theatre, Banuta Rubess returns with a show that also draws on the talents of dancer/choreographer Julia Aplin.

Other anticipated productions include a play by Rachel Ganz, directed by Carly Chamberlain both just graduated from the National Theatre School. The acclaimed Nova Bhattacharya, who blends classical bharatanatyam with contemporary dance, joins forces with multidimensional artist and tabla player Ed Hanley.

This is going to be a festival bursting with talent.

Dancing with the stars

It wouldn’t be summer without Dusk Dances, the al fresco dance festival that takes over the east end’s Withrow Park in August.

This year’s edition, the 22nd, is hosted by Allegra Charleston, has an opening musical act, Doubletooth, and features new choreography by Myriam Allard, Susie Burpee, Gadfly Dance Company’s Ofilio Sinbadinho and Apolonia Velasquez, Michael Caldwell and Milan Gervais

The family-friendly program makes use of its outdoor setting. Burpee’s This Is How We Love includes audience participation about what love feels like, and Gervais’s Auto-Fiction is an unusual ensemble of two dancers and a car. Sounds like one creative collision.

August 1 to 7, Withrow Park (725 Logan, south of Danforth, between Logan and Carlaw),  416-504-6429 ext 24, duskdances.ca.
