Richard Strauss’s tragicomic ode to the chaos in creating art, Ariadne auf Naxos, returns to the COC for the first time in 15 years in a production helmed by Paul Curran (2023’s Tosca). Acclaimed Metropolitan Opera regular soprano Rachel-Willis Sørensen makes her COC debut as the story’s soprano charged with the unusual task of singing both the haughty Prima Donna and the mythological figure of Ariadne in a single performance. She is joined by COC favourite baritone Russell Braun as the Music Master and tenor Clay Hilley as the Tenor/Bacchus. COC Music Director Johannes Debus leads the COC Orchestra through Strauss’ score rife with sparkling humour and emotional grandeur.
