Co-presented by: Hart House, University of Toronto, Hip-Hop Diaspora, Habana Hiphop, and Loop Sessions Toronto, Hip-Hop Diaspora 2.0: Hip-Hop, Technology, and Memory in the Americas explores the DJ as both artist and archivist, positioned at the crossroads of diaspora, memory, and sound.
Centered on Hip-Hop’s Caribbean foundations and rooted in the cultural geographies of the Americas, the series places the sample library, the record collection, and the turntable at the heart of the story.
Through film screenings, fireside chats, a DJ soundclash, and keynote talks, the program traces Hip-Hop’s migratory DNA, linking Jamaican sound system culture to its rebirth in the Bronx and following its reverberations through Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Canada, and beyond. The series opens with a keynote by Jamaican cultural historian and broadcaster Dennis Howard, who grounds Hip-Hop’s story in the global influence of reggae and sound system culture, and concludes with a keynote reflecting on how diaspora has shaped the Canadian Hip-Hop sound.
Audiences will experience rare-vinyl listening sessions, live demonstrations of turntablism, and conversations with DJs, record collectors, and community archivists who reveal how diasporic stories are preserved in sound. Foregrounding vinyl culture and crate-digging as modes of place-making, Hip-Hop Diaspora 2.0 maps connections between records, regions, and resistance. Here, the DJ emerges as more than a party starter: they are a custodian of diasporic knowledge, a translator of histories encoded in grooves, and a guide through overlapping sonic territories and textures. The series invites audiences to listen deeply and reflect on how Black and diasporic stories continue to be preserved, played, and passed on, one record at a time.
