As an innovative filmmaker who champions African literary storytelling traditions, Sembène’s legacy has been rightfully preserved amongst other filmmakers in the region. Often touching on prolific themes Ousmane actively makes a point of depicting colonialism, tradition, patriarchy, and the portrayal of power– its use and abuse. Sembène’s work exemplifies a personal yet accurate point of view of power within African traditions and forced colonialism.
