The COC starts off the New Year with Verdi’s monumental hit, Rigoletto, in a production helmed by Christopher Alden. In this beloved opera examining power dynamics and relationships, the court jester Rigoletto is desperate to hide his daughter Gilda from his lecherous employer, the Duke. When this fails, Rigoletto becomes obsessed with revenge, quickly setting off a disastrous ending. COC Music Director Johannes Debus leads a cast of COC favourites through Verdi’s thrilling score, including baritone Quinn Kelsey (Macbeth), widely regarded as today’s leading Rigoletto, in the title role. He is joined by soprano Andrea Carroll (The Marriage of Figaro) as Gilda and tenor Ben Bliss (Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte) as the Duke of Mantua.
