With wo competition-winning soloists and the power of timpani, Sinfonia Toronto’s January concert is the kind of night that reminds you why live music exists.
Pianist Élisabeth Pion, 29-year-old French-Canadian Gold Laureate, praised for her technical precision and expressive range and violinist Julia Mirzoev, named one of CBC’s Top 30 Classical Musicians Under 30 , take the stage together for an evening anchored by Bach’s radiant Violin Concerto in E Major and the Toronto premiere of Ustvolskaya’s fierce Piano Concerto for Strings and Timpani. Norbert Palej’s “Song of Smyrna” receives its world premiere, and the evening closes with Edvard Mirzoyan’s magnificent Symphony for Strings and Timpani, three works united by the drama and drive of timpani, all under Maestro Nurhan Arman.
