Chase away the winter blues with a trip to Spain when Rossini’s playful, irreverent comic opera The Barber of Seville returns to the COC. The story follows Count Almaviva, who is hopelessly in love with Rosina, whose overprotective guardian Doctor Bartolo has her locked inside his home with plans to secure her family’s fortune. The Count hires his best friend, barber and schemer Figaro, to help true love win the day. This fun-filled and circus-like production by Spanish collective Els Comediants is a perfect introduction to opera for audiences of all ages. Several artists make their COC debuts, with baritone Luke Sutliff as Figaro, tenor Dave Monaco as Count Almaviva, and mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny as Rosina. Baritone Renato Girolami and bass–baritone Luca Pisaroni return as Bartolo and Basilio, respectively.
