The Hidden Power of the Needle – Women, Work & Untold Histories

March 24 @ 6:45 pm9:00 pm

The Sororum presents The Hidden Power of the Needle — Women, Work & Independence.

On Tuesday, March 24 (6:45–9:00 PM), join us at 401 Richmond Street West for an intimate evening exploring the hidden history of women, money, and work in Toronto’s Garment District.

At a time when women were denied financial autonomy, seamstresses used the needle trades to earn, save, and survive. The evening features Dr. Alanna McKnight, Toronto-based historian and fashion expert, who brings these often-overlooked stories to life.

Guests will also enjoy a self-guided walk through the Museum of Toronto exhibition The 52: Stories of Women Who Transformed Toronto.

Set inside 401 Richmond, a former factory and historic site of the 1931 Dressmakers’ Strike, the venue itself is part of the story.

Light refreshments and a grazing table will be available throughout the evening.

This gathering honours women who shaped their own lives through agency, determination, and resolve.
