Set within the Women’s Art Association’s historic gallery, the evening invites members, friends, and guests to gather for a soulful performance celebrating love, connection, and the enduring power of music for a special night commemorating Songs from the Heart.
Lisa Hartt’s work is rooted in a career spanning decades, defined by artistic reinvention and emotional depth. Emerging from Montreal’s vibrant folk scene, she went on to perform on international stages, blending folk, soul, jazz, and rock into a distinctive, expressive voice. As front woman of The Lisa Hartt Band, she released the acclaimed 1976 album Starwatcher, earning a Juno Award nomination for Most Promising Female Artist, with the single One Time Movie becoming a lasting hallmark of her legacy. Her recent recordings continue this lineage, offering songs that are at once personal and universally resonant.
At the heart of Hartt’s music is a profound journey of resilience. After stepping away from her career to care for her late husband, she returned to songwriting as a source of healing, rediscovering music as a sustaining force. Her 2022 EP Arrive marks a powerful return, reflecting more than 40 years of sobriety and recovery.
The lead single, Don’t Tell Me How I Feel, draws from the loss of her younger brother, Christopher, whose death due to mental illness profoundly shaped her work. This personal path has also led Hartt to become an ambassador for Birdsong, a charity dedicated to supporting musicians and artists living with mental illness. Together, these experiences infuse her music with themes of recovery, compassion, and a quiet strength found in vulnerability: values closely aligned with WAAC’s commitment to artistic expression rooted in lived experience.
