Want to see your grocery money go to a better place than into the pockets of big food, big agro biz and big chain empires? Roll up your sleeves at your neighbourhood natural food co-op or do a good deed by buying a box of seasonal greens from Foodshare, one of Toronto’s favourite charities. Best of all, these altruistic (and affordable) ways of stocking your fridge with healthy items are non-profit.

GOOD FOOD BOX (FOODSHARE) Taking their field-to-table concept everywhere from social housing centres and church basements to the homes of women living with breast cancer, Foodshare’s Good Food Box program distributes affordable seasonal delights to 200 neighbourhood drop-offs around the city. Choose between small or large boxes filled with organic or non-organic, largely locally grown produce and feel good about supporting a charity that helps people get back on their feet and fosters holistic community living. Weekly, biweekly or monthly delivery. 416-363-6441. www.foodshare.net

KARMA CO-OP Pitch in two hours a month at this Annex grocer and get deep discounts on largely locally grown organic produce along with other natural goodies. Non-working members pay a small surcharge. $70 to join (refundable) and $15-$17 in annual fees. 739 Palmerston. 416-534-1470. www.karmacoop.org

ONTARIO NATURAL FOOD CO-OP This not-for-profit distributer delivers natural and organic dry goods as well as fridge and freezer foods to health food stores and co-ops across the province. But the great part is that small groups of families, friends or community groups can get in on the discounts. So pool your purchasing power and gather up five or more adults to start your own buying club. Any surplus funds the ONFC makes go back into educational work and community development projects. 416-503-3663. www.onfc.ca
