Lactose intolerant? Try these alternatives to creamy iced treats.
1. Tofutti ($4.99/500 ml, Rating: NNNN ) Though the vanilla tastes like frozen melted cheesecake (no complaints here!), this soy-based ice is completely dairy-free. Bonus: kosher and halal!
2. Soy-N-Joy ($7.95/500 ml, Rating: NNN )
With a lineup that includes 33 uncommon flavours (durian, adzuki, ginseng), these soy-based vegan ices are also low-glycemic, diabetic-friendly and trans-fat-free. Sadly, they're only available from the source (664 Finch East, at Bayview, 416-218-0255), but free delivery is offered to north Toronto, Markham and Richmond Hill with orders over $24.
3. Rice Dream ($3.69/500 ml, Rating: NN )
Devoid of lactose, cholesterol and refined sweeteners, this rice-based product also lacks flavour, tasting more like a milky sorbet than ice cream. But then, being dairy-free, it should, right?
4. Cool Hemp ($5.99/500ml, Rating: N )
Hemp has a number of wonderful uses. It makes a fine rope and, I'm told, an interesting after-dinner cigarette. However, it should never be included in a non-dairy frozen dessert, even if it is certified organic. Think grass clippings. What were these people smoking?
