Debu’s Market debut

Not to be confused with his chi-chi uptown Debu’s Nouvelle Indian Cuisine (552 Mount Pleasant, at Belsize, 416-927-9340), Debu Saha has just launched Debu’s Indian Cuisine (291 Augusta, at Oxford, 416-968-7111) in Kensington.

The two week-old take-away sees one of Toronto’s top south Asian chefs return to his low-budget Roy’s Square roots. Expect exceptional $10 curry combos – butter chicken with mutter paneer, lamb korma with okra – sided with basmati rice and straight-from-the-tandoor naan instead of pricy five-course Indo tasting cards. To catch the club crowd, he’ll stay open on Fridays and Saturdays till 4 am and deliver to nearby U of T, too.

“We still have to pass a couple of inspections so we’re not quite set up,” says the French-trained chef. “There’ll be a lot more on the menu, especially vegan dishes.”

Smart move seeing as the tiny café shares a corner with student faves Urban Herbivore, Wanda’s Pie in the Sky, and Big Fat Burrito.

“We also have wrap rolls ($6),” adds Saha who also plans a backyard patio. “They’re like a tandoori lamb burrito with salsa, only wrapped in naan.”
