Though the Mitzi's mothership continues in its original location (100 Sorauren, at Pearson, 416-588-1234), its Parkdale sibling has temporarily closed up shop. Watch for Mitzi's Sister (1600 Queen West, 416-532-2570) to be reborn March 1 in the former Tennessee Tavern (1554 Queen West), a nearly three-times-larger space that should significantly reduce the popular spot's weekend brunch stroller congestion.
Leave it to Wanda Beaver to write a retro cookbook devoted to classic 40s and 50s North American desserts. Named for her pair of bakery cafés (7A Yorkville, at Yonge, 416-925-7437; 18 Six Point, at Kipling, 416-236-7585), Wanda's Pie In The Sky (Whitecap, $22.95) spotlights several of the comfort food recipes that have made her acclaimed among pie cognoscenti -- Ontario sour cherry, strawberry rhubarb, lattice-topped apple -- as well as other easy-to-follow formulae for cobblers, cheesecakes and cookies. Now supplying baked goods for Pusateri's and Kalendar on College, Beaver learned her craft growing up in the St. Catharines fruit belt and baked her first pie in 1961 at the age of nine.
"I was a little too old for an EZ Bake Oven," she laughs, recalling her early electric range experiments.
