Two of Toronto's most enterprising foodies, Wanda Beaver of Wanda's Pie in the Sky and Dinah Koo , formerly of Dinah's Cupboard and Tiger Lily, have teamed up to start a North Toronto food shop they've cleverly dubbed Wanda's in the Kitchen with Dinah (1057 Mt. Pleasant, at Sherwood, 416-483-0399). Featuring the best of both - over-the-top 1950s-style desserts and comfort-food mains - the uptown storefront is mostly takeout, but there are a few stools for anyone who wants to hang out. Their big sellers? Date squares and shepherd's pie!
Lemon Meringue , the stylish Bloor West Village boîte, is shuttered for the summer and preparing to move into new digs nearby come autumn.
Bye-bye Ban Vanipha
Toronto's only Laotian resto, Ban Vanipha , the Dundas West diner on the edge of Kensington and Chinatown, has unexpectedly called it quits. Principal Peter Thavone is taking time to travel and pursue other interests that don't involve food. Sister spot Vanipha (863 St. Clair West, at Alberta, 416-654-8068) continues.
After a successful four-year run - an eternity for a trendy trat - Simon Bowers 's swanky YYZ on Adelaide West closed rather unceremoniously last fall. Chef Chris Zielinski left the monochromatic sci-fi room for Ultra , but it's about to be reborn as the downtown satellite of chic pasta parlour Autogrill (495 Eglinton West, at Tarlton, 416-489-0961). YYZ's airport departure lounge decor has been toned downed with warm wood accents, and its airtight designated smoking room - one of only a few in the core - is a thing of the past.
