Wiener wars
The fierce competition between Toronto’s street food vendors was ratcheted up a notch this week when second-generation hot dog flogger Spiro Karigianis , whose family has had a cart at Queen and Spadina for some 35 years, reduced the price of his regular $2 dogs to a buck. Not only that, but he’s slashed his sausage on a bun from $3 to a toonie. The dog dealer next door promptly followed suit, though the corner’s third cart has yet to knock down its knockwurst.
Mmmm, Masala
Admission’s free for this weekend’s (August 4-7) Masala! Mehndi! Masti! at Harbourfront (235 Queens Quay West). Now in its fifth year, the South Asian arts fest also includes a food court in Ann Tindal Park and adjacent sculpture garden that features some of Toronto’s best-known Subcontinent kitchens, among them Jaipur , Bombay Bhel , international vegetarian franchise Saravanaa Bhavan and North York’s luxe Cuisine of India .
