Front St. Foods pulls into Union Station

Not only is Front West no longer an enormous crater, but this summer, the renovated Union Station is becoming a bona fide food destination (bonus). Front St. Foods, an open air market featuring a rotating cast of Toronto food vendors and restaurants, runs today until August 30 in the newly revamped plaza outside the station.

From morning til evening, seven days a week, commuters and downtowners can swing by and pick up a meal, a midday snack or some take-home treats – or hang out at a picnic table in the cheery seating area, which capitalizes nicely on Front’s potential as a people-watching destination.

Atmosphere aside, the two dozen or so vendors offer a smorgasbord of local eats that works perfectly for the downtown lunch crowds. Most notable might be the Uncle Tetsu’s booth, where you can pick up one of those famous Japanese cheesecakes in a fraction of the time it takes to wait out the line at the Bay St. bakery. (Fair warning, though: The price gets jacked from $8.88 to $14 for a whole cake.)

If cheesecake won’t do it, there’s also seafood lunches (Little Fin and Fresh Off The Boat), street food (Hot Bunzz and Yolo TO), frosty treats (Jedd’s Frozen Custard and Eative), baked treats (Miche Bakery, Fred’s Bread), refined Spanish pintxos (Cava Sur) and even a little java (Hula Girl and Station Cold Brew).

It’s a nice hint at things to come for Union Station – and a perfect excuse to get out of the office and into the sunshine.
