Though it was originally scheduled to launch last summer, Nu Bugel (240 Augusta, at Nassau, 647-748-4488) has finally opened in the Market. Nu who?
"Nu as in new concept and Bugel with the umlaut is the region in old Germany where the bagel was invented," says head Bugel boy Roberto Iglicki.
And what bagels! Fired in a wood-burning oven, they're available in five flavours - plain, poppyseed, sesame seed, onion and everything, the latter all of the above plus additional caraway and sea salt (all $1 each/$5 half dozen/$9 dozen). The ex-Kalendar general manager also offers an extensive lineup of bagel based-sandwiches like lox and cream cheese with red onion and lemon caper aioli ($8) and spicy black-bean hummus, pea shoots and crantini jelly ($5).
But are they as good as a St Urbain-style Montreal bagel? Head around the corner to My Market Bakery (184 Baldwin, at Kensington, 416-593-6772) where they're 70 cents a pop or $7.50 a dozen and decide for yourself.
