Kensington Market Organic Ice Cream (66 Kensington, at Baldwin, 416-835-7781) continues to grow. The parlour reknowned for its inspirational ices – crème fraiche with honey and cardomom, cayenne ‘n’ coffee chocolate, green tea with white chocolate and raspberry ripple – not only supplies restos like Big Mamma’s Boy (see page 42), Tempo (596 College, at Clinton, 416-531-2822) and the re-launched Agora in the AGO (317 Dundas West, at McCaul, 416-979-6612), but retailers such as Karma Co-op (see page 46), the Healthy Butcher (see page 43) and Whole Foods (87 Avenue Road, at Lowther, 416-944-0500). Coming soon: flavoured organic yogurt!

Ying Ying Soy Food (St. Lawrence Market South, 905-847-5592) has developed a line of organic soy products that includes tofu in miso, tofu burgers and a faux Sunday roast made with bean curd, honey and garlic. Over in the Annex, Super Sprouts (720 Bathurst, at Lennox, 416-977-7796) grows its organic cress and seedlings – sunflower, buckwheat, alfalfa and, our favourite, potted cat grass – on site.

And for those wishing to germinate their own crop, Grow Hydroponics and Organics (1304 Queen East, at Alton, 416-469-3333) has all the equipment needed to become a DIY farmer, from organic micro-brew fertilizers, 100 per cent natural worm casings and – holy crap, Batman – bat guano.
