Zo long, Zelda’s

Church Street’s most popular bar has hosted its last Best Ass contest. Zelda’s, that playfully trashy dive on the Village’s main drag closed suddenly last weekend. Here’s how owner Zelda Angelfire explains things.

“The lease has expired at our location on Church Street,” writes Angelfire on the resto/bar’s website. “A new lease would have led to a rental increase above what we could handle to stay in business. So Zelda has packed up the trailer and is heading over to 692 Yonge to open a new and fabulous oasis of fun and festivity!”

This isn’t Zelda’s first move. The bar started out on Wellesley in the space now occupied by Ghazale before moving into the sprawling Church Street home of the campy Cheap Show and Drag Idol. And if 692 Yonge sounds like a familiar address, it used to be The Living Well, the lounge that first launched Angelfire into the spotlight.

Watch for the new Zelda’s to open in late October.[rssbreak]
