This weekend, Kealan Sullivan celebrates 69 Vintage’s (1100 Queen West, 415-516-0669) fourth anniversary, but instead of standing on the corner of Queen and Dovercourt handing out happy birthday coupons and free balloons for the kiddies, she’s giving the city’s second-hand shoppers what they really want: an old-fashioned, dig-until-you-look-dandy vintage-by-the-pound store.
Hop onto your folding bikes, hipsters, club kids and chic cheapies, and cruise to Sullivan’s new basement boutique at Bloor and Brock. The giant room is outfitted with chrome bins, shopping carts and circular racks loaded with all the fluorescent windbreakers, flowery dresses, plaid shirts and terry cloth rompers you desire.
What sets 69 by the Pound apart from the Parkdale mothership? Aside from the counter scale where you weigh in clothing ($15/lb), jewellery ($5/lb) and footwear ($10/lb), this outlet lets the customer be the picker. That means more weeding through retro rejects, a couple of mending stitches or a quick Windex shoe shine might be in order, but if you’re only sporting those Spandex bike shorts for one night at Circa, they’re probably fine just the way they are.
69 by the Pound picks: We sent Sullivan digging, and she pulled out a silk shirt, a striped nautical V-neck, silver flats and a white electro dress, which added up to $25.50; for the boys, a cotton golf jacket, a short-sleeve western shirt and blue swim trunks were $22.
Look for: A sewing area where you can remake clothes on site, and a vintage buy-back program coming soon.
Hours: Tuesday to Sunday noon to 6 pm.
