Cheeky chic

SIGNATURE PRODUCT: How creative can you get with a cocktail napkin? If you’re Avril Loreti, you print them with lipstick stains, fortune cookie phrases or Hermès Birkin bags in a rainbow of colours and add them to your product lineup of coasters, bags and other textile buys screened with similarly cheeky graphics.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: “I like to keep my approach contemporary and minimal, playful and pretty,” says Loreti. Take the doughnut totes she debuted earlier this month at the One Of A Kind Show. “I’ve paid homage to iconic designer chairs and the luxurious Birkin bag as a way to consume them for myself. Now I’ve entered the world of decadently delicious treats.”

NEW WORKS: Loreti is expanding her Toronto building napkin series, which already features OCAD, City Hall, the McLaughlin Planetarium and the TD Centre. “It will include Robarts Library on the U of T campus,” she says. “I just love that peacock!”

WHERE TO BUY IT: Napkins ($26 for a set of four) and tote bags ($25) are available through avrilloreti.com. Pieces are also sold at Distill (55 Mill, #47, 416-304-0033), C1 Art Space (44 Ossington, 416-538-7999), Shopgirls (1342 Queen West, 416-534-7467) and Wise Daughters Craft Market (3079 Dundas West, 416-761-1555).
