The first look on the LG runway during Holt Renfrew‘s fashion week opener was a Jeremy Laing gown designed to mimic the shape and front pocket detail of an apron. Not the most glamorama catwalk kick starter but a sharp piece nonetheless and a good way to set the tone for a Toronto season that’s already been more wearable than ever.
After the Laing looks there were smart Smythe jackets, Denis Gagnon’s surprising florals, pixilated prints from Dennis Merotto and Wings + Horns’ knit suiting. Lida Baday, Twenty Cluny and Naked & Famous rounded out the Holts roster.
Next up was Juma who debuted peacock feather prints and a lighter version of their graphic fall knits in the smaller Studio runway space. Newest to the line is a collection of bold coloured duffle bags, clutches and totes that are guaranteed to be as covetable as their ever growing silk scarf lineup. Arthur Mendonça’s show was the most anticipated opening night event and it didn’t disappoint. Segments of the presentation focused on raw edged spring tweeds and bleeding stripe prints. Mendonça said his inspiration was Elizabeth Taylor’s epic 1963 version of Cleopatra. His stylist and longtime collaborator George Antonopoulos accessorized the exits with Dean Davidson‘s new collection of oversized earrings and cocktail rings to hit that over-the-top reference home.
