Franny Vintage

FRANNY VINTAGE 1394 Queen West, 416-531-8892, frannyvintage.com. Rating: NNNNN

Toronto summers are made for vintage dressing: a flowery frock for a picnic on Ward’s Island, a pin-up bathing suit for sunning in Trinity Bellwoods Park, a pair of hardy pumps to pedal-push you out to the Beach. Whatever your warm-weather activity and its corresponding wardrobe want, the city’s newest retro clothing resource has got you covered.

Franny Vintage is named for owner Kerry Butt’s granny, and one look at her throwback glamour shot hanging behind the Parkdale boutique’s cash desk shows you why. Franny’s modern-day imitators have no trouble hunting down flowing 50s dresses, prim handbags and lacey lingerie on the narrow shop’s tightly packed racks.

Butt isn’t married to one era, though, mixing 60s-to-90s picks that create the mix craved by modern vintage shoppers. A hallway leading to the floral-fabric-draped change room is where you’ll find Franny Vintage’s showpieces, which rarely top the appropriately retro price of $50.

Franny vintage picks: Bright roses bloom on a 50s bathing suit’s black background, $30 a pleated poppy-coloured dress is accented by a Peter Pan collar, $40 put on a pink party dress with a silky floral overlay for your next summer bash, $50.

Look for: New clothing, including denim and Alternative Apparel T-shirts, are added to the mix in August.

Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11 am to 7 pm, Sunday noon to 5 pm.
