FREE YOUR GAME 202 Augusta, 416-850-7115
Forget those hipsters bowling bocce balls and swinging croquet mallets in Trinity Bellwoods Park. If you really want to be simultaneously sporty and subversive, we dare you to step onto a golf course. And not wearing old-school argyle knee-highs and pom-topped caps (as cheeky as those are). Outfit yourself in the stylish golf gear from Kensington Market’s newest boutique, Free Your Game.
Golf in Kensington Market? Is this the apocalypse? Co-owner Rachael Tate says never fear, fresh fish and patchouli shoppers. Her boutique, co-owned by partner Jeff Walter, fits in just fine, with organic cotton and bamboo polo shirts by upstart Canadian labels like Quagmire and Triple Bogey, vegetable-dyed Brave Leather belts and black Golf Refugees balls that come packed in graffiti-tagged boxes.
Clothing sourced from preppy brands like Penguin and Ben Sherman, a wall of plaid caps and fedoras and fluorescent Iomic club grips are all par for the modern golfer’s course.
Free Your Game picks: Feel Golf’s designer-series wedge comes with an inverted grip, but we like it cuz the wedge head and the grip are yellow, $140 to $160 Hattie Smart’s golf gloves are cut from a rainbow of butter-soft leathers, $45 a black Triple Bogey polo shirt is printed with a silhouette of three golfers at the final hole, $46.
Look for: Puma’s limited-edition silver golf shoes, designed by pro Johan Edfors and actor Luke Wilson.
Hours: Monday to Friday 11 am to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 7 pm.
