From FAT to Fashion Week

Forget fashion week’s front row. Katrina Tuttle’s spring collection (pictured above) is already a hit with the cleaning staff at her downtown hotel.

The Nova Scotian designer has been camped out on the 18th floor of her home away from Halifax since the weekend, covering buttons and steaming pleats into the whimsical skirts, jackets and dresses she’ll be showing today at 5 pm.

The collection’s most fantastic pieces are over-the-top frocks in three dimensional florals and evening dresses with her signature folds cascading across the bust. The detail also appears on the line’s strongest pieces, a series of three quarter sleeved coats in tweed-like silk and silver Lurex -laced cotton.

If Tuttle’s name is familiar it’s because she was one of the standout designers at last spring’s Alternative Fashion Week.

“FAT helped with a lot of pre-press,” says Tuttle. “People already know my name before I show at LG Fashion Week for the first time.”

Wesley Badanjak, who shows his Lovas line immediatley before Tuttle today also had his first taste of the catwalk at FAT.

“FAT was an amazing venue to get my feet wet,” says Bandanjak. “But I think showing at LG Fashion Week gives a designer a certain amount of credibility. It gives buyers more of an incentive to invest in a new label.”

Stores that stock his spring line will get Bandanjak’s take on Adriatic style which includes shrunken blazers, palazzo pants and maxi dresses in black, navy, sand, white and coral.[rssbreak]
