Getting Carried away

What does a fashion writer do on a Tuesday afternoon between sending his section to press and settling in for an evening pounding out 3000 words? He sneaks out of the office to Vertical at First Canadian Place and downs samples of Skyy Vodka’s new lineup of Sex and the City 2-themed cocktails of course.

Most of the mixes are appropriately sugary concoctions of simple syrup, fruit juices and Sprite but, since I’m obviously a Miranda, my taste gravitates to the “Red Over Heels”, with its sophisticated, muddled base of basil and red grapes.

On my way back to the office I read giddy tweets from colleagues at other fashion rags who are all wondering which of the movie’s too-many-to-count Toronto premieres to attend?

If your name is not listed on a magazine masthead and you want to beat the Manolo-loving masses to a preview before the film’s May 27 release date, Fashion Television’s Jeanne Beker is hosting a benefit screening at the Scotiabank Theatre on May 26. Proceeds support research in women’s brain health at Baycrest. Tickets are $125 online or by calling 416-785-2500 x.2045.

Companies officially connected with the film are out capitalizing on their sponsorships. Swarovski is already pitching the embellished handbags, champagne flutes and set dec chandeliers it contributed to the movie.

Other brands are hitching their marketing wagons to the impending SATC mania. An e-mail from Barnes & Noble suggests I get “Carried Away” this summer with it new tote collection printed with umbrellas, beach balls and sea horses.

And Balisi is hosting cosmo-and-stiletto parties at its four Toronto shoe shops on May 19 and 20. The invite reads “If a night of sisterhood, drinks, men, and fashion doesn’t leave you feeling satisfied than a 20 per cent discount and a chance to win movie tickets undoubtedly will.” Today is the last day to RSVP by e-mailing info@balisi.com.
