Hair Pieces

Rating: NNNNN

Sexy, irreverent and always — even when they’re messy — elegant, updos are everywhere, mercifully sleeker than big hair. A single smashing piece of hair jewellery can party through a whole season, from film festival galas to New Year’s Eve, and never get tired. And it doesn’t need to cost a bomb. We found lots for $10 or less.

Cloth roses (1), for example, cost $7 at College retailer Silence (695 College, 416-516-5509). Translucent lucite cubes (2) are big sellers that go from caj to sophisticated, $8 at Accessity (136 Cumberland, 416-972-1855).

Brilliantly coloured ostrich clips from Silence (3) are fabulous and frivolous, $10. Toronto hair accessory label Beadle offers great value, like these bejewelled hair stix (4), $12 each at Red Pegasus (626 College, 416-536-3872).

Coloured crystals are huge for hair right now. Ayala Bar’s simple barrette pins (5) make a subtle statement, $28 at Red Pegasus. For a more substantial hit, check out the hand-set pink-and-green pavée crystal clip (6, $70), the “diamond” tiara hair band from Accessity (7, $50) or the elasticized pavée crystal ponytail wrap (8, $6), both at Accessity.

Israeli designer Michael Negrin’s limited-edition brass-set crystal pins are stunners (9 and 11, $28 each), from Mink (550 College, 416-929-9214). Finally, faux-diamond bobby pins (10) can jazz up any style, $5 each at Accessity.
