The Hotel on Rivington once had sole bragging (and air rights for the best views on New York's Lower East side but now a new Thompson Hotel has come to this part of town. Thompson L.E.S. opened very softly on Tuesday welcoming its first night guests into a space still clad in scaffolding and crawling with construction crews.
By Fashion Week in September, the tall black building's dimly lit hallways will be crawling with the style jet set who are always hot for a new place to park their overnight bags. There will be lofty suites with translucent shower rooms, a pool tiled with an Andy Warhol film strip and staff dressed in a Rogan wardrobe that will make fashionista guests feel right at home.
There will also be Toronto chef Susur Lee's first New York restaurant on the second floor mezzanine overlooking the hushed lobby and extending out to a patio that annexes the roof of the building next door. Shang, as it's tentatively called, is the chain's first taste of Toronto. The second bite will be the Thompson Toronto hotel, which brings the boutique brand to Bathurst and Wellington in 2009.
