Janet Hill

Janet Hill www.janethilldesign.com Rating: NNNNN

For any designer, a creative spark is one thing, but having the guts to push your own product on seasoned buyers is a whole other skill set. Unless you’re Janet Hill. Retailers, showrooms and journalists whom she shamelessly cold calls (and calls again) appreciate her persistence when they start rifling through silky tunics, blouses and dresses piece-dyed in marbleized, watery colours.

Her spring collection landed at Boutique Le Trou, Pho Pa and TNT blu, all of which responded to its warm-weather-friendly L.A. mood. These aren’t tarty clothes for celebutantes and gossip girls, though. A visit to Tokyo’s Matsuya Ginza department store in 2006 turned Hill on to Japanese pattern-making techniques, so halters and frocks hide yards of pinched and circle-stitched fabric inside their deceptively simple shapes.
