Joeys Atelier, 473A Church, 416-925-2702 Rating: NNNNN
Ritzy retail dreams dance through your head as soon as you step into Youssef Hasbani ‘s Joey’s Atelier . The Church Street decor store takes up three stylish floors of a chic art deco-appointed New York brownstone, from unfinished wood plank floors to ceilings full of luxe glass and red silk sultan-style chandeliers.
Interior design amateurs, and some of city’s most coveted decorators, wander carefully among stacks of smoked glass vases ($25) and mirror-topped tables ($990) to feret out the occasional metal conquistador helmet ($68) and rhinestone-collared poodle-shaped picture frames ($16.50).
Joey was Hasbani’s childhood nickname, and he uses the moniker to set the boutique apart from his 18-year-old uptown store L’Atelier (1224 Yonge, 416-966-0200). Furniture like a handsome walnut twin platform bed ($3200), though scaled down to fit the ‘hood’s small condos, holds on to every inch of worldly style.
Hasbani’s picks: A woven twig deer head that picks up on the taxidermy trend minus hunter’s guilt, $630 sparkling Murano glass chandeliers, $1,500 to $3,200 and citrusy body products by Lothantique, a perfect bath time pick-me-up.
Look for: The spring arrival of new deco-inspired pieces from Hasbani’s own line and smart black iron outdoor furniture to beef up your balcony’s style.
Hours: Monday to Friday noon to 8 pm, Saturday 11 am to 7 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 5 pm.
