Local favourite Elle Hardware closes after five years

In sad news for the ever-shrinking Queen West retail strip, indie jewellery store Elle Hardware announced it will close its doors on June 23. The sister-owned emporium of quirky baubles was voted Best Jewellery Store in our 2014 Best of Toronto reader’s poll, in part because they stocked many Canadian designers and artisans.

“Elle Hardware is truly blessed to have had so many fruitful, fun and sparkly years on Queen Street West. What an amazing neighborhood to be a part of my how ‘You’ve Changed,’” wrote co-owner Lindsay MacMillan in an e-mail to customers and media. “It is with great optimism that I close this very magical chapter of my life and begin to look forward at the start of a new one.”

In a separate e-mail to NOW Magazine, MacMillan wrote that the store’s lease was up this year and she decided not to renew. She plans to focus “more on jewellery, and slightly less on running a shop.” She also plans to upgrade her education with the Gemological Institute of America. Hopefully this means Macmillan won’t be gone from the local design scene for long.
