The GTA’s tandem mecca is located in the middle of Mississauga, surrounded by the sort of suburban sprawl that causes most bike enthusiasts to bawl into their handlebars. We promise it’s worth the ride west, and owners David and Brenda Vandevelde recommend taking the waterfront trail and pedalling north on Ford Drive and the 9th Line if you’re making the trek on two wheels (people do).
Nineteen road, mountain and touring bikes by KHS, Co-Motion and other supersized cycle brands start at $695 and fill up the teensy, two-room space. The cramped quarters don’t bug tandem shoppers, though, who come here to test-ride the bikes. Other shops usually sell tandems only by special order, and none in these parts lets you sample from such an extensive stock.
Once you choose your bicycle-built-for-two, the Vandeveldes can trick it out with tandem-specific racks, panniers and fenders and tweak it all up the next time you’re ready to captain your stoker back to the shop.
MBS Tandems picks: The Vandevelde’s personal ride is Co-Motion’s Periscope Torpedo Co-pilot model, which can be disassembled and packed into a standard suitcase for easy travelling, starting at $4,980; an Arkel “Bug” pannier converts to a backpack with ample room for helmets and other bulky gear, $176; keep an eye on your co-pilot with the Miracle rear-view mirror, $19.
Look for: MBS’s annual tandem rally in Gananoque brings together cycling duos from across North America, May 23 to 26.
Hours: Monday to Friday 6 to 10 pm, Saturday 9 am to 6 pm, or by appointment.
