MIKE'S MUSIC, 105 Danforth Rating: NNNNN
Owner Mike Waite says what sets his CD and DVD shop apart from the pack is his staff's and his stock's tolerance of different musical tastes. An open mind has led Mike's to champion artists like Feist, Joanna Newsom and Andrew Bird before the big names sold their discs, but Waite is just as happy to sell you something by Olivia Newton-John.
Indie record store status means you pay a little more for new releases but a little less for older discs, so your music budget breaks even in the end. Mike's Music picks: An Ingmar Bergman boxed DVD set includes titles like Hour Of The Wolf and The Serpent's Egg, $69.99; light fixtures including a rare Handel bronze chandelier with five bent-glass shades are priced between $175 and $9,000; mellow out to Damien Jurado 's And Now That I'm In Your Shadow album, $16.99.
Look for: More antiques in Waite's Cool and Unusual basement furniture shop, open Saturdays and Sundays.
Hours: Monday to Friday 11 am to 9 pm, Saturday 10 am to 7 pm, Sunday noon to 6 pm.
