Compared to Toronto’s other cultural institutions, the Textile Museum of Canada flies under our radar. Galleries and museums like the ROM, AGO, Ontario Science Centre, Bata Shoe Museum and The Powerplant have all built high profiles with pricey renos, blockbuster exhibits and posh parties.

The Textile Museum is tucked away in a non-descript high rise behind city hall and hosts a small rotation of shows that fit its mandate of “connecting cloth, culture and art.” It’s probably best known for its More Than Just a Yardage Sale where stitchers and knitters pick up discounted fabric, patterns, yarn, notions and crafts. This year’s sale is this Friday and Saturday.

To up its visibility and cash in on the spring benefit season, the museum formed a Style Advisory Council made up of fashion editors, publicists and other industry members to throw an Androgyny-themed fundraiser next Thursday (June 4). Fashion illustrator Danielle Meder created the invitation figure above.

Starting at 8 pm, a panel discussion on gender bending style featuring journalists David Livingstone and Derek McCormack and designer Mikhael Kale will be followed by a cocktail party and a tour of the Cutting Edge exhibit that spotlights pieces by Issey Miyake and Yumi Eto.

The organizers suggest looking to fashionable examples of androgyny like Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking look and David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust to inspire your own party outfit.

Tickets are $45 by calling 416-599-5321 x.2230. Best costume wins a big prize.
