This weekend is Doors Open Toronto, an opening up of the city’s buildings and landmarks for free public tours. To navigate those open doorways, one of my favourite local developers has put together a handy iPhone-ready guide – and, appropriately, he uses the city’s freely available or open data.
Brian Gilham, the man responsible for TTCupdates and other public-minded web applications, has taken three Doors Open tours and placed them on doorsopento.mobi, which navigates beautifully on the iPhone. Find sites by district, accessiblity, or visiting official sites or calling from your phone, or finding yourself on Google Map.
Of course, I especially like that Gilham is using NOW Magazine’s Doors Open highlights on the mobile site, as well as curated lists from my friends at Torontoist and BlogTO.
But I also love that Gilham made the unofficial web app with free, open data from the city’s Open Data project. It’s a great example of how well the system can work with some effort.
With the open data project still in its early stages in Toronto, doorsopento.mobi is a good promise of what could come next.[rssbreak]
To use the site this weekend, just go to http://doorsopento.mobi on your iPhone.
