THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO THIS YEAR’S JUMP-UP

Q+A : Caribana Listings |

WHO: Patrick “Kenyatta” Yussuf, stylist for Big It Up (www.bigitup.com)

WHERE: King and Spadina

WHEN: Thursday Afternoon

CLOTHING: “My white woven jute hat with grosgrain ribbon detail is $30 at Big It Up (58 Spadina, 416-591-0864, and others). The short-sleeve linen dress shirt is from Harry Rosen (218 Yonge, 416-598-8885, and others), and I got these striped khaki dress pants from H&M (1 Dundas West, 416-593-0064, and others). I picked up my white loafers at Capezio (218 Yonge, 416-597-6662, and others), and you can get a horn bracelet like mine at any Big It Up location.”

HAIR: “Sofia at Carla’s Hair Studio (738 Lansdowne, 416-535-1209) does my dreads.”

MYSTYLE: “Comfortable, free wear with an attitude.”

INTO: “Producing funk, soul and jazz for my music label, Thirsty Music (www.thirstymusic.com). Reading up on techno capitalism in U of T prof Arnold Harrichand Itwaru’s Negative Ecstasy. I love the vegetarian platter at Soul Food (582 Lansdowne, 647-438-9730). It’s a little hard to spot, but the food is great. Hanging out at Harbourfront (235 Queens Quay West, www.harbourfront.on.ca) during the summer and taking in the different mix of food, music and culture every weekend. Seun Kuti’s show there in June was amazing.”

CARIBANA TIPS: “Check out Island Soul at Harbourfront (August 3 to 6). The reggae is a good alternative to the soca and more commercial parties happening around town. Barrington Levy is performing there Sunday at 9:30 pm. Don’t forget to bring lots of water and your Big It Up sun hat!”
