THE PURPLE PURL 1162 Queen East, 416-463-1162, www.thepurplepurl.com Rating: NNNNN
When we stopped by the Purple Purl last week, it was still all plywood and plaster dust, and owners Jennifer Campbell and Miko Schechter were pondering the perfect aubergine shade to paint their new yarn shop and café. By the time the doors open today (Thursday, November 15) for their launch party between 5 and 10 pm, the walls will be a mix of Coneflower Purple and Victorian Iris.
Unless, that is, those walls are hidden by a grid of criss-crossing cubbies overflowing with balls of locally sourced and eco-conscious yarn. Connecting knitters, crocheters and other crafters with the provenance of their wool is part of the team's reason for setting up shop. (Some yarn is even labelled with the name of the sheep it was sheared from.) The other is to offer knitting guilds and stitch 'n' bitchers a space to spend the day with friends, needles and a cup of fair trade brew.
