They make a big design statement and can even feel great, but comfy chairs don’t need to cost a lot. We set out on a mission to find some excellent armchairs and recliners in the $100-or-less range and found that the budget selection suits every style.
The quilted-canvas-covered Lounger that Urban Outfitters (235 Yonge, 416-214-1466) sells in a rainbow of colours lives up to its name and then some. For $82 it’s a good deal, but be warned: the upholstery is not rated as safe around open flames.
At $29.99 for Ikea’s futuristic Oppala (15 Provost, 416-222-4084), exceptional comfort has never been more accessible.
Mostly Movables (785 Queen West, 416-504-4455) offers some of the city’s better deals on vintage (in this case 70s) upholstered furniture — when it can get the stock. The red velvet beauty shown here is priced to sell with its mate in uber-trendy olive at $199 for the pair.
Classic rattan rings in with both style and comfort in StrucTube’s Fabio ($49 in antique finish, plus $15 for the white canvas Fabio cushion, 111 Avenue Road, 416-927-8252).
International industrial design star Karim Rashid’s Oh arm chair for Canuck manufacturer Umbra stacks up on many counts ($70 at Proud Canadian Design, Queen’s Quay Terminal, 207 Queen’s Quay West, 416-603-7413).
People either love or hate the Butterfly chair sensation, so try before you buy. Urban Outfitters’ folding model is extremely practical and nicely priced at $44 for the frame and $34 to $38 for fabric covers (sold separately).Easy chairs
