Song Bird Music

Rating: NNNNN

Send the fashion boy to cover the music store and he’ll want to write home about the frilly JJ Heart acoustic guitar he spotted that’s available in pink, baby blue and seafoam green, with a heart-shaped sound hole.

Luckily for the more instrumentally inclined among you, Song Bird Music stocks gear with as much substance as style, to guarantee your own cred never suffers.

Since 1988, Song Bird has filled up with new but mostly used instruments and accessory gadgets. You don’t need to convince local beginner bands or industry know-it-alls that it’s a must-stop shop for the popular models of the moment (Gibson acoustic guitars are current cool kids for their classic, clean sound) and wide selection (stacks of drum kits in pearl, lacquer and sparkle finishes).

Keyboards, electric axes, the occasional accordion and a cubby-hole cabinet filled with drumsticks are all in store, but staffers are happy to scour the globe for the perfect piece to complete your outfit’s soundscape.

Song Bird picks : The Fender Twin Reverb amp recreates the classic 1960s model, $1,095 a 2000 Gibson Les Paul Standard sparkles in limited-edition red, $2,695 Z-Vex Woolly Mammoth crackly effects pedals get one-of-kind painted, signed and dated, $395.

Look for : The in-house repair shop where a basic guitar tune-up costs $40 to $70.

Hours : Monday to Friday 11 am to 7 pm, Saturday 11 am to 6 pm.
