Store of the week: The Chic Canuck

THE CHIC CANUCK thechiccanuck.com

After years of telling readers to shop local, I’ve learned most consumers need more than patriotism to persuade them to buy Canadian. Homegrown products must be easily accessible and have a certain coolness factor.

It’s unfortunate so many companies and makers miss the mark on this. Too many have barely functioning websites, let alone an e-commerce platform. Too many think simply labelling something “Made in Toronto” will do the trick.

The Chic Canuck knows better. The startup online shop was founded by lifestyle blogger Gracie Carroll to address some of the problems I just mentioned.

“I couldn’t figure out why there wasn’t one destination online where you could shop and discover emerging independent Canadian brands. So I decided to create it myself,” says Carroll.

The site is easy to navigate, well curated and stylish. Carroll has a keen eye and understands that ethical and sustainable shopping can – and must – be trendy. She often invites local fashion bloggers and personalities to share their favourite spots and products on the blog section of The Chic Canuck, which she envisions as a “tastemakers’ guide to Canada.”

“A lot of the time, people think supporting local means buying ‘crafty’ items, but really in Canada you don’t have to sacrifice style, quality or taste to shop local,” she says.

The Chic Canuck picks“We recently started carrying 100 per cent botanical perfumes by Evoke, and I love that they are vegan and cruelty-free,” says Carroll. “This is a must-have for anyone with an interest in green beauty and a love for perfumes. My personal favourite is the Metal scent.”

She also points out The Chic BB necklace– a collaboration between The Chic Canuck and local jewellery label Blackbird. She hopes to host more collaborations and maybe even an in-house line on the site soon.

Look for One of my favourite housewares brands, Said the King, sells on the site. Their Fuck You, Love Me pillowcases have been featured in more than one NOW gift guide and are the perfect cheeky addition to any bedroom. Also check out Jacqueline Poirier (aka the Crazy Plate Lady)’s artistic offerings.
