Style notes for June 23 to 29

Design awards

When the team at Azure Magazine launched their first design prize, the AZ Awards, last fall, they didn’t count on receiving 600-plus entries from 25 countries. And looking at the list of winners who were announced at a party last Thursday (June 16) at Harbourfront Centre (235 Queen’s Quay West), including Philippe Stark and Toronto’s own Teeple Architects, the caliber of the submissions likely exceeded expectations too. You can check out an exhibition of the winners’ work, featuring pieces like the Invitrum recyclable kitchen and Alexander Josephson’s Temporary Mosque, which scored the $2500 student award, at Harbourfront until September 25.

Kiehl’s turns 160

Skincare staple Kiehl’s turns 160 this year (it doesn’t look a day over 100 if you ask us must be all that eye cream) and to celebrate the company is hosting a Canada-wide Shop for the Cause campaign tomorrow (Thursday, June 23). Starting at noon and continuing until 2:40 pm (160 minutes, in case you’re counting), 100 per cent of proceeds from sales in store and online will be donated to the Canadian Association of Pediatric Oncology Camps.

Dogwalk drinks

The only time I’ve ever been on a runway was at last fall’s Paws for the Cause party, a cat, er, dog-walk show that raises money for the Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust Fund. This summer, the Paws committee is fundraising with a lemonade stand run out of the John Steinberg and Associates salon (585 King West), opening Friday (June 25) and continuing every Friday and Saturday throughout July and August. And mark October 27 in your calendars because that’s when a fresh batch of novice models walk for gala number two.

TNT tricks

Toronto’s designers are pretty capable of creating great clothing and building marketing buzz but getting their stuff to retail is still a tough sell. TNT owner Arie Assaraf is schooling brands on how to get on his racks and beyond with a Toronto Fashion Incubator seminar on Tuesday (June 28) at 6:30 pm at his Hazelton Lanes flagship (87 Avenue). Tickets are $35 for TFI members and $60 for non-members at fashionincubator.com/shop.
