Style sneak peek

An eager publicist e-mailed last week inquiring about NOW’s holiday gift guide deadline for 2009? “Hold your holiday horses,” you may be thinking but, in the time-warped world of style media, the request isn’t that ahead-of-the-curve.

This month, magazines are working on their September issues so designers and publicists are filling showrooms and hotel suites with autumn wares, hoping for a coveted spot in the year’s thickest and most well read issues.

We work with much less lead time so in case I forget my favourite fall discoveries come September, here are five finds from May’s round of style sneak peaks.

H&M.jpg

1. H&M Divided Exclusive collection: The second half of the Matthew Williamson for H&M line may drop tomorrow but the fashion blogosphere has already moved on to buzzing about fall’s Divided Exclusive collection. Look for jeans covered in Balmain-like tears, studded tweed booty shorts and this velvet dress with extra large leg of mutton sleeves.

2. Hamilton Below Zero watch: You might as well Wikipedia the term Steampunk now because the industrial sci-fi aesthetic is poised to be a big designer inspiration point. Hamilton‘s Below Zero watch ticks towards the trend, mixing mechanical elements with a rubber strap and a black-on-black colour scheme.

3. Brose: Designer Marika Brose has taken a page from the book of Smythe. That line is known for making just great jackets and Brose is enjoying similar success by focusing on chic cocktail dresses. Fall’s looks include strapless options with tiers of ruffles or feathers and a jewel encrusted LBD.

4. Converse rubber boots: Converse continues to expand its collection beyond basic Chucks and preppy Purcells. My pick from the fall lineup is a new, sneaker-styled rubber boot available in black, army green and classic galoshes yellow (pictured above).

5. Trash and Luxury t-shirts: Los Angeles-based Trash and Luxury prints cotton tanks and t-shirts with vintage Harper’s Bazaar covers and other pop style graphics.
