The retail sector has been hit hard in the aftermath of September 11, and shipments to the U.S. have slowed down to the point of pain. Trendy T-dot label Fiction Design Co.416 (whose line can be found at Noise, Odyssey, Alius Streetwear, Mothership, Alter Ego, Tripp and Attic) is stuck with a lot of surplus — the stuff that was headed south of the border. Rather than devaluing the line by selling off the overstock through discount chains, the company is opening an outlet store of its own. FDCO’s Surplus is open for business at 425 Queen West from Saturday (November 17). 416-504-6554.

The Fashion Junky, aka fashionjunky.com, is cleaning out her closet, selling off an inventory of current (fall/winter 2001) styles by fab brands including Teen Flo, Kookaï, Club Monaco and Old Navy, Sunday (November 18) from 1 to 4 pm. The catch? Some items are gently used, and everything is in petite sizes. 50 Holly, #107. 416-992-3265.

When high-end furniture retailer Up Country holds a factory showroom sale, the markdowns are amazing. Everything at the 16 Eastern Avenue location — including special orders and floor models as well as older stock — is being reduced by 20 to 70 per cent off the original price. Most of the items are big-ticket (30 per cent off a dining room suite can mean a saving of $2,000), but there’s plenty for under $100, including hardwood stacking trays with chrome legs, regularly priced at $225, on sale for $65. The sale runs from today (Thursday, November 15) through November 25. 416-360-1559.

Cute Christmas craft shows are already happening. This weekend (Friday to Sunday, November 16-18) it’s Plaid Tidings, at Branksome Hall girls school. Don’t let the name and location fool you — there will be some funky stuff, including a booth full of wares by 401 Richmond’s own Gwendolyne Hats. 10 Elm.
