The streets of Reykjavik are pretty empty during the week but on Saturday morning, the locals come out to shop.

The Iceland Design Centre tipped us off to the best boutiques for sourcing young Icelandic designer clothing and accessories so here is our Take 5 of chic Reykjavik buys.

Thelma Design headbands.

These whimsical hair accessories are topped with spirals of colourful rope and pleated discs of floral fabric.

Farmer’s Market sweaters

Partners Bergthora Gudnadottir and Joel Palsson create traditional Lopapeysa sweaters but knit their pullovers and cardigans in leaner shapes. The collection is sold everywhere from Keflavik‘s souvenir shop to Reykjavik boutique Kisan’s new Soho store in New York.

Steinunn scarves

Lengths of wool, cotton and cashmere in neutral blacks, blues and grays are folded, pleated and ruffled into organically sculptural neck warmers.

Aftur clothing

The Aftur collection could be called Reykjavik’s Preloved. Press shy designer sisters Raven and Bara Holmgeirsdottir rework vintage clothing and found textiles into fashion forward tunics, caplets and sack dresses.

There’s more ruffly goodness in this line of frilly, bow tied shoulder bags and spherical purses.
