David Chang shows off his window display at Holts.
WHO: David Chang, coroflot.com/davidhyunchang
SIGNATURE PRODUCT: OCAD industrial design grad Chang won one of the school's 2008 medals with his thesis project, Mobi, a library cart that doubles as a desk for students toting hefty books and searching for a place to study.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: "I'm attracted to design that is simple in function and clean in aesthetics," says Chang, "but there's always room for fantasy and imagination." Chang lets his design dreams fly in the display department of Holt Renfrew's flagship store, where he's created cardboard dogs, couture headpieces and a dress with a 10-foot train of shopping bags.
NEW WORKS: Chang is prepping submissions for 2009's Come Up To My Room and Interior Design shows while working on a collection of soft flowerpots made of vinyl-coated mesh that scrunch up and down to fit any size of flower or plant.
WHERE TO BUY IT: LTD. RUN, a result of Chang's collaboration with fellow designer Annie Lum as Pots & Pans, is a series of Kinder Surprise-style boxes packed with vintage souvenir spoons, pins and ashtrays, available for $40 at thesouvenirshop.ca.
