The Mercantile

Rating: NNNNN

THE MERCANTILE, 297 Roncesvalles, 416-531-7563, www.themercantile.ca.

College Street’s favourite gourmet general store has left club-clogged Little Italy and made the move to foodie-friendly Roncesvalles. Shannon Doyle’s tasty space looks like a country grocery, complete with oak shelving and counters stacked with tea tins, vintage cake plates loaded with organic truffles and mammoth Mason jars full of spices, nuts and other culinary bits and bites.

The Mercantile’s storefront used to be home to Soap Scope (www.soapscope.com), and fans of its glycerine bars and scented soy candles will be happy to know they still fill a hutch in the shop. Mrs. Meyer’s lemon and lavender cleaning products are all natural and perfectly packaged in apothecary bottles.

Shoppers who stop by for their weekly Sha Sha fix (hot tip: a new lemon ginger cookie has just arrived on the store’s shelves) shouldn’t forget that the Mercantile does up custom gift baskets and treat-filled tins.

The Mercantile picks: Savoury take-home goodies from Bathurst and Dupont’s Madeleines, Cherry Pie and Ice Cream include leek-and-goat-cheese quiche and beef bourguignon tourtière, $16.50 and up Kakayo truffles with almond ganache and ginger-pecan centres, $1.99 each custom-designed gift baskets packed in reusable flower pots, mixing bowls and bamboo steamers starting at $20.

Look for: A weekend lemonade stand every Sunday.

Hours: Monday to Wednesday and Saturday 11 am to 7 pm, Thursday and Friday 11 am to 8 pm, Sunday noon to 6 pm.
